Quick Hit: Warner Bros. knows how to piss off their fans

Here are some quick bits of information that are coming from Warner Bros. studios. First, we are apparently going to be graced with another ramp up for a potential Justice League movie. Spare me your excitement. Warner Bros is pushing to get something in the pipeline as Disney/Marvel are moon walking all over the place with that sweet Avengers money. So instead of taking their time and building proper back stories for all the needed characters WB will just slam in some piece of junk in a few years, my guess 2015. With Man of Steel coming in 2013 could this be the beginning of a connected universe? I am highly skeptical of that. By the way, the writer for the JLA movie will be Will Beall, the writer for the upcoming Gangster Squad. In fairness this movie looks awesome. However, that means nothing when it comes to a JLA live action movie.

In other news, I hate Warner Bros. Apparently, my wishes have come true and a Wonder Woman movie is on the horizon! YEAH! Not so fast. Here is the bad news: It will be written by one of the guys who wrote Green Lantern. BOOO! Yes that’s right, Micheal Goldenberg will take a crack a Wonder Woman. My rage level is climbing! Why would you pick a writer from the worst comic book movie is recent memory to pen such an important character? Its not clear whether Wonder Woman will be connected to make the aforementioned JLA movie, but once again I doubt that she will be. I really want a proper WW movie, but the creative team behind Green Lantern? Come on! What do you think?

Give me a break.. Wonder Woman is going to suck balls. Green Lantern was one of the worst movies in recent memory, why do they keep hiring incompetent directors/writers? It’s probably because they are cheap to hire. Warner Brothers, prepare to enter the dark ages after The Dark Knight Rises ends it’s theatrical run, and you best be prepared when it does.

While I’m not surprised that WB would look to recreate the success of The Avengers with their own superhero equivalent of JLA, I can’t believe they would be so obtuse as to think that they will have the same success without the proper narrative buildup.

People invested time and emotion in nearly a half-dozen OTHER Marvel films before most even knew the would be an Avengers film. That was the real power of the Marvel movies. Their (continuing) journey has been so successful precisely because the studios gave each character the attention they deserved.
To WB: You will get out exactly what you put in. If you hastily throw together a JLA movie penned by a writer with a dubious resume, you will not see the money printing machine that you hope for. Sadly, you probably will make some money, but don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll break any kind of records.

To me, Green Lantern’s awfulness seems to originate mostly from WARNER BROS, not anyone else. Ryan Reynolds MIGHT have been miscast as GL, but in press interviews promoting the movie, he certainly seemed to ‘get’ who Hal Jordan is. Martin Campbell, the director, made two of the best James Bond movies, period, in Goldeneye and CASON ROYALE (’06). Geoff Johns, creative consultant on GL, is the man responsible for making GL comics popular enough to warrant a movie in IN THE FIRST PLACE! So, I think Johns, getting overenthusiastic, might have thrown in too many of HIS GL ideas, and the studio heads said ‘Eh, why not..?’ and the 2011 crapfest is what we got. So, I think its an even spread, although I credit Campbell /w GL’s godawful ‘CGI-fest’ art direction. GL is a space COP, and should be treated as such. Keep it simple, /w Abin Sur’s crash, Hal’s acceptance of the ring, and his pursuit of Atrocitus (while trying to avoid everyone finding out that we’re NOT alone in the universe), and you’ve got a good story foundation. Pace it like a chase movie, and keep it on Earth, dammit! Save all the Lantern Corp stuff for the sequels.
