Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:1-5
I have a problem with those who profess to know “THE TRUTH”, as if there is just one. So often as nerds we fight back against the defamation of our beloved pop culture icons by slinging insults. Instead of flinging insults, lets dissect the behavior of those who judge and claim to know the truth. This year at San Diego Comic Con was my first. Upon arriving the first thing I noticed outside of the convention center was a group of “evangelists” proclaiming the superiority of their “God.” I have no problem with people believing what they want to believe. I also have no problem with them professing that belief. However, what I do have a problem with is the manner in which some choose to do it.
As we passed this group of apparent protestors, Jay asked the question “Are you out here because comics are evil?” I think this was a very astute question and one which was immediately responded to with, “No, there are just a lot of people here.” This answer would be believable if we had not been preached to in line for Hall H. Pamphlets such as the one below were even handed out. This one was titled Doorways to Demonic Possession.
Let me break it down for you. First off, we were of course in line for 10 hrs. As we approached a man holding a bible, we were told that we were wasting our time on earthly pursuits and that we should turn to “God.” This was something that really pissed me off. This same guy would see nothing wrong with standing in line for a ride at the “wholesome” Disneyland. I am sure their church has made trips to such places. To me the greatest witness would have been for this man to help out the homeless guy that was no more than 20 feet away from where he was preaching.
If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered. Proverbs 21:13
It seems to me that there is a notion of good and evil that is totally binary. As one Comic-Con patron passed the crowd we heard him yell out “What would Yoda do?” That is a good question. What would Yoda do? I would argue that Yoda would not advocate for the methodology that these “evangelists” are using. It should never be because of a fear of hell that a woman or man works towards righteousness, however that woman or man defines the term. Yoda said it best when he said,
Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.
To me this is the current state of affairs in the U.S. We cannot fear that which we don’t understand. We must learn to be patient and learn from one another. There are so many things that can be learned from comics and other forms of “worldly endeavors” that are outside the scope of organized religion.
You will know… when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack
We can go in guns blazing from either perspective. The comic nerd who wants only to defend his sacred past time or the religious zealot who wants to convert the heathens. The important thing to understand is that it is never a binary opposition. The world is a much calmer shade of grey.
