When a down on his luck businessman, Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey), teams up with a hot shot geologist, Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez), to try and make their fortune in gold mining in  the deep jungles of Indonesia this seems like a recipe for cliche filmmaking, and in a lot of ways it is. However, director Stephen Gaghan makes the relatively simple story into something that works incredibly well thanks in large part to the performances of his leads. Based loosely on the true life of Canadian businessman David Walsh, Gold works to present not only a fun action less adventure story but to push the notion of perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds.
