<em>Rogue One</em>

Director Gareth Edwards received mixed reviews for his 2014 film, Godzilla, but most agreed that his talent for spectacle was alive and well. When he was announced as the director of a Star Wars prequel film, the cheers were few but clearly Disney saw something in him that many did not. Taking place just before the original 1977 Star Wars film, Rogue One, tells the harrowing story of a team of six unlikely heroes coming together to steal the plans of the newly built Death Star. Simply put, this is a classic war film set in the familiar space opera Star Wars universe, and it’s executed with absolute precision and style. Not only a standout blockbuster for the year, but a true standout amongst Star Wars films in general. Rogue One manages to deliver on story, character development, emotional weight and space driven intense action. Unsurprisingly, the folks over at Disney have another massive hit on their hands.
