Between The Rock and Hard Time

On his latest movie set in London, The Rock, Dwayne Johnson, chased down thieves wearing hoodies while waving his fake police badge. According to the New York Times, The Rock single-handedly tackled a gang of burglars on the set of his latest movie. He saw the burglars breaking into a van containing equipment.

Nerd Core Failing: The Fall of Geek Royalty, MC Chris

MC Chris is Dead… is the name of one of MC Chris’ albums and maybe it foretold the future.

Do you know of MC Chris? He’s a high pitched geek culture rapper made a bit extra famous by his roles as MC Pee Pants on Aqua Teen Hunger Force and the infamous Hesh on SeaLab 2021. Over the years he has toured A LOT, almost constantly. He sells his CDs mostly at shows and online through iTunes and Amazon. He’s been at this over ten years now with songs consisting mostly of geek references like Sci-fi, fantasy, gaming and how hard life is as a geek growing up. This dude’s fanbase is pretty big and rather loyal. I used to be one of them… used to.

Rex Velvet: Seattle’s New Supervillain

Rex Velvet: Seattles New SupervillainI have to say this is quite an interesting development in the whole Phoenix Jones mythos. Apparently, he now has an arch rival in Rex Velvet. Velvet caries a dagger like object shaped like the Seattle Space Needle. If that is not enough, he is a dapper fellow in a bowler with a mustache…even his drink has a mustache. We will see where this goes, but I am sure we will be hearing plenty of Muwahahas in the future. See the video after the jump.

After watching the documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed and listening to Nerdpocolypse’s episode What Dreams are MAID of?!, I am left with some lingering thoughts about our fascination with bound women or MAIDens (metaphorically and literally).

The documentary, which is streaming on Netflix, profiled the series of exploitation films made during the 60s, 70s, and early 80s in the Philippines “where stunt men came cheap, plot was obsolete and the make-up guy was packin’ heat!” Legendary B movie producer Roger Corman produced countless films with images and plot elements that would end up on the cutting room floor today with the current ratings system where women were repeatedly raped, bound, caged, tortured, etc.

Fan Fiction done right: PacMan & MegaMan

Fan Fiction done right: PacMan & MegaManI am not much of a fan of fan fiction. I think people generally work hard to produce something rather mediocre. I have seen my share of BAD comic movie fan fiction and I am rarely impressed by it, with the exception of the Portal fan fiction from a number of months ago. With all that being said, check out these surprisingly well done fan fiction shorts that were recently released. What do you think?

Editorial: Ranma 1/2 and Turbo Teen: Sex Change to Oil Change
“More than meets the eye” is line from the theme song for the Transformers that informs you that more lies beneath the surface than what might be originally seen by the naked eye. The phrase also refers to the transformation that occurs when the Transformers spring into action. Transformation is not something that only happens for robots in cartoons; it has been attributed to humans as well. This article deals with two examples from the 1980’s and 1990’s Turbo Teen and Ranma ½. The goal is to look beneath the surface of these cartoons at the underlying sexual and gender implications for their protagonists.

Quick Hit: US court rules mutants are not human

Quick Hit: US court rules mutants are not human

Despite the never-ending fight for mutant rights, a US court ruled that mutants are no more than animals or monsters. Lumped into this ruling were the X-Men, X-Force, Spider-Man, and other characters. The court case centers around tariff laws. Toy maker Toy-Biz made the claim that X-Men and other action figures were not “dolls” but toys and therefore should be taxed at a lower rate. Dolls are taxed at a 12% higher rate than other toys. In order to make this claim they set back mutant rights for decades to come. Their claim was that mutants were animals or monsters and not humans. I am sure that Professor X is not happy about this one! The court case can be found here: Toy-Biz vs. The United States. (via Boing-Boing)
